HACCP
Advantage
Several provincial governments in Canada have
developed food safety programs based on HACCP and
designed specifically for small and medium sized
food processors in their province. Each of these
programs are based on the original Ontario HACCP
Advantage model and evolved to meet the
regulations and standards of the individual
provinces. Food and beverage processing
facilities wishing to adopt a government
recognized food safety program can implement one
of these programs:
In Ontario, the provincially recognized programs
are known as the Advantage Series of Food Safety
Programs, including Advantage GMP, Advantage
HACCP and Advantage HACCP Plus.
In Manitoba, the programs are known as GMP
Advantage, HACCP Advantage and Advantage Plus+.
In Alberta the programs are known as Alberta
HACCP Advantage (AHA!); AHA!GMP and AHA!HACCP.
Official certification confirming adherence to
these programs is provided following successful
completion of an independent t audit. In Ontario
and Manitoba this is provided by the Canadian
General Standards Board. In Alberta, independent
auditors recognized by Alberta Agriculture and
Rural Development can provide certification.
HACCP provides businesses with a cost effective
system for control of food safety from ingredient
sourcing through production, storage and
distribution to the final consumer. The
preventive nature of HACCP not only improves food
safety but also complements other quality
management systems.
Other benefits include:
As food safety standards improve, staff morale
generally improves
Avoids food safety risks, and embarrassment for
your customers
Ensures you are compliant with applicable
regulations and codes
Organizes your process and procedures, including
buying practices
Organizes your staff, promoting teamwork and
accountability
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and
Rural Affairs has developed The Advantage Series
of Food Safety Programs.
